Mission Statement

Hello and welcome to my new blog. I’m PhantasticStudent. This does not mean that I am a fantastic/amazing student who can’t spell. This spelling is a deliberate move away from that image and toward the realms of fantasy, illusion and the supernatural.

Now that that’s out of the way I can go on to introduce myself. I’m a sophomore in college. I live in the United States. I’m not going to be much more geographically specific than that. I’m an English major with minors in folklore and anthropology. My goal in life is to write what I love for a living and not have to live out of a cardboard box. Until I am able to realize this dream, I will do my best to support myself with a job that I can tolerate, if not enjoy.

You may find yourself wondering what it is that I write (if not you can skip over this paragraph). I write what I enjoy reading, which consists primarily of fantasy and mystery fiction and the lovely cross-over genre, urban fantasy. I realize that writing genre fiction is generally frowned upon by the academic community for the simple reason that it is like Shakespeare’s work was in his time: meant to entertain the masses. This means that there’s a great deal of spectacle and not always enough substance. My goal in studying literature and the English language is to find a way to bring the nebulous quality of literature into my favorite genres. This is a slow, ongoing and occasionally painful process. Right now the elements of writing that I am focusing on revolve around that most important aspect of a story, the characters. Branching off of this is inter-character relations and dialogue. The dialogue is improving at a better pace than the other elements.

Now that I’ve rambled on about my writing I feel that it is important to inform you that this blog is not devoted to my fiction. It is meant to be an outlet for my opinions of books, primarily in the fantasy genre. After all, the best way to write is to read and to analyze your response as a reader.

So there you have it. Expect sporadic, enthusiastic updates as I am, in fact, a student with a slightly hectic schedule and a great deal of mandatory reading on my plate.

Much love,
PhantasticStudent
